Building Your Own Platform: Reasons You Might Want to Start a Blog

They don’t call the era we’re living in the information age for nothing. We’re inundated with information on a daily basis. It comes from our phones, our computers, our televisions, and even our friends and family. And because everyone has a website or a blog or a podcast, maybe you’re wondering if you should join the chorus of voices spouting off about everything under the sun. Here are some reasons why you might want to start a blog or website if you’re still undecided.

You Find Social Media Inadequate

Maybe you don’t like the superficiality of tweeting on Twitter, or maybe you find Facebook restrictive. Then again, perhaps you don’t like the photo diary format of Instagram, or you just find Reddit weird. If no social media outlet speaks to you or seems to embody your style, it might just be time for you to start your own blog.

The good thing about a blog is that it allows you to be very creative. You’ll decide on how you want your pages to look, and of course, you’ll control the content. If you want a journalistic blog about what’s going on in your community, complete with current weather information, you can do that. If you just want to blog about how you’re feeling, you can do that too. Your blog means your rules.

You Have a Lot to Say

Let’s say the overwhelming amount of information you take in on a daily basis has left you with a lot to say in response. Blogs aren’t usually for people who just want to make a few comments on a topic or an issue. Blogs are for those who have volumes to say about something or even everything. The great thing about a blog is that there’s no limit to how much you can say.

There’s also no limit on what you say. Social media sites have a tendency to mute opinions and voices they find politically incorrect or offensive. That wouldn’t be a problem if you created your own blog for the simple reason that you control what’s in it. Of course, you’ll still want to be responsible with your words, but at least no one has control over you.

You’re Starting Your Own Business

Despite the fact that it makes sense for every business to have some type of presence on the web, many fail to have their own website or even a presence on social media. If you’re starting a business, building a website will serve to give it some legitimacy. It also serves as a great way to advertise whatever you’re selling.

In case you’re wondering why a business profile on a social media site isn’t enough to promote your business, keep in mind that business profiles on such sites can be limiting. You’ll have much more leeway to explain the mission of your business and craft the design suited to your tastes on your own business blog.

You’re a Creative and You Want to Express Yourself

If you’re someone who likes to write, there are few better ways to give vent to that creativity than through starting a blog. A blog allows you to express yourself in written form in ways a social media site might not allow. It’s also a great way to improve your writing skills. The more you write, the better you get at it.

You’ll want to keep in mind that what you write will be available for the world to see, so you’ll want to steel yourself against critiques and criticism. But even things like criticism will only serve to make you a better writer.

If you find social media sites inadequate, you have a lot to say, and you think of yourself as creative, you may want to start your own blog. You might also want to start a blog if you’re starting your own business. If you do decide to start your own blog or website, you’ll be in good company since millions of people around the world have built their own sites. So why not take the plunge and start a blog? You have nothing to lose.
